Phosphoric Acid preporation ƒ ƒ | Bookmark
To my suprize TFSE did not show any info on creating this usefull acid and google was not much help either. I found something that said to use bone meal and sulfuric acid but was not specific. Bone meal at garden stores contains 20% phoshoric acid and cost around $6 for 20 lbs. All the garden shops said to use this [0-57-0 bone meal] when I asked for ph-down. Im sure bees would rather make their own as opposed to online ordering. So hows it done? It only takes 1 beer to get me drunk, Im not sure if its the 11th or 12th one |

There is no Phosphoric Acid in bonemeel. But alot of other phosphorus salts. But it is otc can't remember where (some toilet cleaner I think) Why not just by it at your local plant center ? (as a Phosphor additive the weed guy's uss a shitload (and how much is a shitload ??) off the stuff. |

I think ammonium phosphate is widely available as a fertilizer,so that reacted with sulphuric. Was it bone meal or bone ash,but I think the latter would be cleaner. Strange recommendation for ph-down,try putting that shit in your hydrofarm! Anyway phosphoric should be available at any good hydro store, just check it isn't mixed with nitric.Obviously you're shopping at less switched on garden stores Brain-Wax® and Elbow-Grease® the choice of all good Chemists everywhere! |

Anybody know of any otc names or brands for this shit? I went to Franks Nersery,k-mart,wal-mart, and mijers garden centers and did not find ph-down. The ingredients on bone meal said contains 20% phosphoric acid among other phosphorus. It only takes 1 beer to get me drunk, Im not sure if its the 11th or 12th one |

Why would you want to make your own? Around swiMT's area, swiMT can obtain it as 'rust remover' from hardware stores quite cheaply. |

The ingredients on bone meal said contains 20% phosphoric acid among other phosphorus. NO ! there is no free phosphoric acid in that stuff, they are just quoting the possible phosphoric percentage in the phosphate salts. Just do some searching on altavista etc for hydroponic suppliers and mail order a bottle of pH Down ! Making your own phosphoric acid from bone ash or triple phosphate can be a messy business and impurities are difficult to remove as phosphoric acid can not be distilled. Comercial ortho-phosphoric acid is prepared by digesting bone-ash with diluted sulphuric acid, s.g. 1.5 (60% H2SO4), for several hours : Ca3(PO4)2 + 3H2SO4 = 3CaSO4 + 2H3PO4 The calcium sulphate is filtered off and the phosphoric acid evapourated to s.g. 1.7 (85% H3PO4). The product is impure, and contains acid calcium phosphate CaH4(PO4)2 Don't cry for me I'm the cleaner |

I have a 1/2 gallon of sulfuric to get rid of so SWIM will try this. 2 questions, Did you mean evap off the sulfuric instead of the phosphoric? Bone meal can be burned to create bone ash correct? It only takes 1 beer to get me drunk, Im not sure if its the 11th or 12th one |

Look at the formula | Bookmark
Look at the formula ! You will not need to remove sulphuric acid if the correct amount is used. Evaporation increases the concentration of the phosphoric acid once the calcium sulphate has been filtered. Not sure about bone meal, I would stick to bone ash or a phosphate fertilizer. Don't cry for me I'm the cleaner |
