<font color="red"><b>Preparing Ether.</b></font color="red"><br><br><b>EQUIPMENT</b> distillation flask water cooled condenser<br>tap funnel thermometer<br>filtration paper rubber tubing<br>ring stand clamp<br>burner asbestos-covered wire gauze<br>ice-bath litmus paper<br><br><b>MATERIALS</b> Ethyl alcohol<br>concentrated H2SO4<br><font color="red">******</font color="red"><br><br><b>WARNING</b><br>1. During the condensation process, do not forget to cool vapor.<br>2. Ether is volatile liquid. Close the mouth of filtration flask with the rubber tubing. Place the<br>filtration flask into the ice bath.<br>3. Do not smell ethers.<br><br><b>PROCEDURE</b><br>1. Set up the apparatus <br>2. Place 50ml of ethyl alcohol into the<br>distillation flask.<br>3. Add 20ml of conc. sulfuric acid into<br>the same distillation flask.<br>4. Put 25ml of ethyl alcohol into the tap<br>funnel.<br>5. Heat the distillation flask on<br>asbestos-covered wire gauze.<br>6. Add ethyl alcohol from the tap funnel at the same rate at which ether distils.<br>7. Boil 5 more minutes after ethyl alcohol has finished in the tap funnel.<br>8. Washing PS starting fluid with hot dH2O ......<br><br>Ether has a little solubility in water because of the two lone pairs on the oxygen bridge, somewhat like 6gr in 100 ml water, if I remember well (don't take this number for granted, check yourself, but it has a little solubility in water, of this I'm sure).<br>Anyway a chem supplier should sell freely ether, last month I bought a 100 ml bottle even in a simple pharmacy....It shouldn't be a problem,unless you ask for 10 liters.
