Copper Condenser for Al/Hg Reductive Amination
|
|
|
Damn. Broke condenser number 2. Only left with one 200mm 19/22 Leibig Condenser but I want to do an Al/Hg reductive amintaion and want two.
So, I searched @ rhodiums and found the Cu condenser. Looks okay, but question...
Is it safe to use a Cu condenser for a Al/Hg reductive amination? Would the Cu be augmented using MethylMans writeup or should the Al be augmented first then added to the reaction?

Copper is not resistant to ammonia and monoethylamine so I doubt it being resistant to monomethylamine.
You mean almalgamation I guess, not augmentation? If you dont pour your HgCl2 through the condensor this is not the problem.
Solutions: - Use stainless steel for the inner tube of the condensor, instead of soldering the cooling jacket you may fix it with epoxide. Make it from plastic thats much easier. - alternativly line the inner side of the coppercondensor with some chemical resistant paint.
Please try to use the right words in future - this makes it much easier to answer questions.
