      Liebig vs. Ahllin

Would a Ahllin condenser work just as good as a Libig on flask in a E/RP/I reaction?

If you're using it as a reflux condenser it will work better.

      works

Sure... but think well you want to to is condense vapors which both will do very well.

It all comes down to the cook style... obviously hotter cooks require a longer cooler condenser.

With the LWR your options are open...  Swim uses a west condenser and it works fine never had a vapor make it past the half way mark (400mm).

Ok thats all

      Liebig = West

but I would prefer a Graham or Allihn condenser. The surface area is larger compared to a Liebig condenser. If you have some money you want to invest a jacketed coil would be preferable. Such a condenser (160x365 mm) has a surface area of 4 x 10-2 m2, compared to 1.3 x 10-2 m2 for an Allihn condenser (250x365 mm).

The "silly question" is the first intimation of some totally new development.

      "Liebig vs. Ahllin"

If you are using your alihn for reflux, it is much better than a liebig. At equal lengths, the alihn has about twice the surface area.
If your using it for distillation, the liebig is preferred. You can use the alihn for distillation providing that you keep it at an angle greater than 45 degrees.
You should provide more detailed info when asking q's.

Well, SWIM will use the alihn (40cm) both to a Placebo's as reflux condenser and as a condenser in a steam destil.

Thank for the advices.
