Whatman filter paper - sep funnel and drying agent

Whatman 1 PS Phase Separator Paper

The Whatman 1 PS Phase Separator is a high grade filter paper impregnated with a stabilised silicone that renders it hydrophobic, retaining the aqueous phase and passing the solvent phase through.

Automatic Cut-Off, Separatory Funnel Replacement

After being shaken, the mixed phases are simply poured directly into the 1 PS circle which is quadrant-folded in the funnel. The separation is extremely rapid so it is unnecessary to wait until the two phases have settled into separate layers. Droplets are automatically separated after only a few moments, giving a solvent phase completely free of the aqueous phase.

In many applications, 1 PS can replace the use of separatory funnels.

The solvent phase flows through the paper quickly and cleanly. It then stops automatically, leaving the aqueous phase completely in the paper. This feature is particularly important when carrying out a large number of routine solvent extractions at the same time. Samples can be shaken with solvent in stoppered conical flasks or test tubes and transferred directly to funnels containing 1 PS.

<< Apart from being incredibly handy for a/b's and sep funnel work; could these be used for the rapid drying of solvents?  They seem confident they it captures ALL aqueous and only passes the solvent phase.  Anyone used these?

hey.... i like....

well if the paper is 100% phobic it would work to dry solvents.... but i guess there would be a small leakage as with everything so running this filter, drying agent then the phobic filter again would make for a bloody quick way for phase sep.

Cool, yeah if anyone has used these can you speak up tell us what they are like and $?

Its just my opinion, but no-one listens to me anyway, and rightly so...

My guess is that it only works well with hydrophobic organics.  I doubt it can be used for dehydrateing anything.

      Whatman filter paper.

Well i'll be buggered, I have plenty of these things tucked away somewhere! I borrowed them off a friend because i ran out of filters for my buchner funnel crazy
Well i'll be damned, thanks for posting!!

And to think i actually got excited about the prospect of not having to wait until phases seperated.
Oh well, better my bubble being burst now, as opposed to well you know..later tongue
Either way, i will double check the packet and see whether they fit the description.

Whatman PS description (http://www.whatman.plc.uk/products/analytical/specialty/a_pd_speci_001.html)

It says complete seperation of phases but nothing about drying solvents, it would work well for phase sep which is described purpose.
However i dont think it would be a complete solution for drying solvents otherwise such a great feature would be listed on the page...

      seperation

For the 'usual' seperation Im sure Ill stic to my sep.funel. But from time to time you will have these nasty imulgation with no seperation at all. In that case these papers might be worth a lot. Ill odre som right awaye.
