Methylamine HCl --} 40% Aqueous Methylamine?  Bookmark

A simple question.  Say SWIM had some methylamine HCl.  Is there any way that methylamine HCl could be converted into 40% aqueous methylamine (freebase, not HCl) without having to go through the gaseous state?  SWIM needs aq. meam, but doesn't have gas apparatus.  not even an hcl generator, because he uses Sigma-Aldrich 2.00 M HCl/IPA solution instead of gassing.

Depends on the use. Some people have claimed good results by dissolving the methylamine hydrochloride in water, then adding alkali or a tertiary amine to liberate the methylamine freebase and then use this mixed methylamine freebase and salt solution.

the use in this case would be CTH reductive amination of MDP2P to MDMA.  ratio would be 30g ketone:3g 10% Pd/C:24mL formic acid:44mL 40% aq. MeAm.  unfortunately the procedure is relatively new.

I don't know what you mean by gas apparatus, but all you need to produce methylamine gas and dissolve it in water or alcohol is a flask, a condensor, heating and stirring. You will also want an adapter to connect the top of the condensor to some plastic tubing, but I'm sure you could rig something up if need be.

Gas apparatus, as swim understands it, would include things like inlet adapters with stopcocks, a gas dryer, and gas dispersion tubes.  Is MeAm gas immediately soluble in water?  If not, then a gas dispersion tube is needed.  If a gas dryer is not used, then you can't be sure how much of the extra weight in the receiving flask is water and how much is MeAm.

The methylamine is very readily soluble in water. A gas dispersion tube is not necessary. In fact, suck back is more likely a problem than poor absorption, an absorption apparatus consisting of an inverted funnel dipping into a beaker of water may be indicated.

If a gas dryer is not used, then you can't be sure how much of the extra weight in the receiving flask is water and how much is MeAm.
Any gas will be mostly methylamine and you will be using a large excess in your reaction so great precision is not required.
