Post 447792 (Aurelius: "US patent 2608583 Racemization of Amines", Stimulants) references Ni as the catalyst for racemization.
I could swear that I read an earlier treatise which stiplated that Pd would racemize Ma: and that Ni will not.
I cannot find it, but would appreciate anyone's input into the
matter.
The referenced post requires hydrogen pressure
along with the Ni catalyst.
A distant friend of Marvin's is reputed to have an ultrasound
cell homogenizer, which he proposes to utilize in a research
experiment on some L Ma in alcohol over precipitated Ni
or Ushibara Ni (Ba if I recall correctly).
He enquired of me whether hydrogen pressure
would be necessary given the ultrasound treatment,
and I said
probably, although in truth I don't know why.
(The Lewis acid flipping of the OH on the precursor
is to a degree understood, but the activity o
f a catalyst metal on the + or- of the methyl amine
is ??? <duh> pure speculation ...)
1. Assuming that hydrogen is needed,
what is the likely
result of the addition of CaH2
in small quantities to the
ultrasound irradiated alcohol/Ma/ Urushibara Ni process?
Certainly hydrogen will be eluted,
but will the calcium screw the works
as it transits to CaO??
2. The hydrogen can be delivered as a gas
to the liquid otherwise.

I found the old patent within which it was noted that Pd
would invert the stereochemistry, whereas Ni would not.
However, this was in neutral conditions and referred to the OH.
Maybe it can't be done..
I do know a person who ultrasound hammered on some l-MA
on ppt Ni and got.......
a smear of broken stuff, i guess.

There is no patent which claims the inversion of stereocenters whilst hydrogenation with Pd - there is a misunderstood quote from a book of Mr. Freifelder. This was cleared up a long time ago. Ni and high pressure can razemise methamphetamine - very high pressure indeed if I remember right.
