      HI

so he tried a few grains of rp. That didn't seem to help, so he added a few more. Altogether he must have added about 10-20 mg, but still the liquid is dark red, almost black

You need to apply heat to the HI/RP
See Post 468577 (biotechdude: "Phosphorous acid (h3po3) activity sumary", Stimulants)

Will SWIC be able to do a reaction with this product? Does it sound like he prepared it correctly?

Yes, the HI is fine.  But you will most definately need to use a P-based HI recycler (Red-P, Hypo-P,P-acid) to clear the HI and reduce the precurser.

Also, use only glass pipes in your setup; as ApprenticeCook suggested.

Thanks to all who have replied.

Even you, AC. You meant well.

When swicc was dreaming about this, or so he said, the smell he described as rotten eggs is not exactly that. It's the smell that you get from a rp/i reaction, Wereami, that some might describe like that. Have you ever used a baloon? It's the smell that seeps through a little during the early stages of the reaction. swicc could believe it's traces of H2S, but if so they must be really small amounts. Swicc works in a garage though, so he can always open the door if the fumes get too strong.

Biotechdude, you sound you understand what swicc did even if he didn't describe it very well. He did try heating the HI(aq) after dropping in the rp, but not for long. He just looked at it again, btw, and it's still the same color. Maybe he didn't put in enough rp. He wishes he could use hypo but hasn't been able to get his hands on any. How much rp would it take to keep a reaction going if he went that way? He figures it would have to be less than if he used rp/i, no?

Oh, about the cpvc. Swicc used it because he has used it before for reactions, and not had any problems. Using it for this process makes him a little nervous because of the high temperatures, but it doesn't decompose. He knows he needs to get some large glass tubing but he doesn't have it yet and he was trying to make do. He has seen posts by other bees that use the braided plastic hose they sell at the hardware store, but that stuff definitely decomposes in a reaction. It gets soft, and it swells and stinks, so he didn't want to use that!
