Safrole "shelf-life" is it an issue?  Bookmark

Hey beez, was wondering if there was an issue concerning the shelf-life of distilled safrole? Does it go bad after a while? Is there a time span during which it must be used or anything like that? Post!!!

Thanks.... keep the honey flowing!

cool Peace out cool

Despite the fact the above post is probably going to get rated UTFSE!, just for fun (the alternative is to study molecular biology...) I did a quick search for the phrase "Sassafras AND stability" gave, as the very first hit, Post 447881 (aragorn: "sassafrass oil stability?", Newbee Forum), which also had a useful link to a post made by Rhodium in Post 369439 (majic22: "what is the shelf life of these?", Newbee Forum).  Searching for "Sassafras AND Shelf" gave the interesting posts Post 174406 (typRat: "shelf life of sassy", Newbee Forum) and Post 390702 (abolt: "Old Sassafras", General Discourse).  This was without scrolling down the search results page... imagine if I had gone further!

Perhaps you should look a little harder next time...

On the other hand, SWISM has become convinced...  Bookmark

On the other hand, SWISM has become convinced that isosafrole has a limited shelf-life, either that or he mistreated it badly somehow.  About 14 months after first isomerizing and distilling some isosafrole, he rediscovered the container, decided to throw it all into a peracetic, and got back exactly 0g of ketone (and a lot of tar and some isosafrole).  Repeated the procedure using freshly made & distilled isosafrole, and got back 67% yield of ketone (after distillation).  Not enough data to draw a conclusion, but it's got him thinking...

(I'm betting that whatever was wrong with that old iso, a distillation would have fixed it)

They call them fingers, but I never see them fing... oh, there they go.

"shelf life" - defeats the purpose  Bookmark

If you've got to re-distill your safrole (meaning that by some way it acquired impurities while it stood bottled) it would seem to defeat the purpose of "storage" since, IMHO, the whole point to "shelf life" is NOT to have to re-distill it. Might as well keep it as sassafras oil & distill when needed, if this be the case - again, IMHO
