      newbee question here.

newbee question here. Local hardware store here has denatued alcohol. on back it says ingredients: alcohols(07-56-1;64-17-5)and kontes(108-10-1) also says contains Methanol! So i just want to make sure this methanol alcohol is good for reductive amination?  Ive read some where denature alcohol is another name for methanol or wood alcohol.  Just want to make sure. Thanks bees!

      pure methanol

If you want pure methanol you should ask around the local
hobby shop, methanol is an ingredient in fuel for model
cars/planes and if you want to mix it yourself you need
to get the pure stuff.wink

I've got tissues with issues

kontes(108-10-1)

Possibly meant to type ketones?

CAS numbers.... look up what they are on google.

But yeah, MeOH is easily found at model shops to make fuel... or distill it from the fuel... whatever you want to do.

I would tell you to UTFSE..........but

...........anyway, all alcohols can be used to aminate.wink

      methyl isobutyl ketone

the denaturant in this case is methyl isobutyl ketone.

      Denatured alcohol = ethanol

Generally, in my experience, "denatured alcohol" means denatured ethanol unless the label says anything else.

if i can get away by using denatured alcohol...

if i can get away by using denatured alcohol instead of pure methanol with reductive amination, then ill do that.ill take abolts advise. has anyone had any trouble using denatued alcohol?

      spelling errror?

My assumption of your situtation is that you are spelling something wrong.  The denaturing of ethanol is AFAIK mostly due to taxation.  They do not want to sell you something cheap and tax free, that can be consumed to achieve a good head buzz.  Kontes is a glasware manufacturer.  Denaturation has to do with the addition of non consumable alcohols to render a consuble alcohol (non consumable), i.e. addition of IPA, meoh, or other alcohols that are not advisably consumed.

As far as the CAS 108-10-1 (Sunlight is correct) that refers to MIBK, (not something you want to ingest)  Methyl Isobutyl Ketone.

Denaturation can be achieved by many means of addition of non consumable agents.

Despite what you may think, denatured etoh, is not another name for methanol.  Ethanol may be denatured with methanol, but that is not always the case.  It may be denatured, with IPA, or in this case MIBK.

As far as it's compatibility with reductive amination, you would have to have some help with some bees that know a little more about organic chemistry than meeeeee...... cool

      Take the time

to source or distil the pure stuff, never use mixes, you're asking for trouble.

There's no justice, just us.

      MeOH sourcing

Or you could just buy AR MeOH from a chemical supplier.
Its not as if Methanol is highly suspicious!
Swim buys 5l for like, $40 give or take a little.
You couldnt pay swim to purify blended solvents via fractional distillation.
This industry relies too much on tedious, time consuming, harmful & wasteful techniques.
I think what we need is some kind of universal reform.

I'm a diamond that is tired, of all the faces i've aquired.
