Can methyl ethyl ketone be distilled to produce pure ketone?

Yes Ask Methyl Ethyl out on a date and then...

Yes

Ask Methyl Ethyl out on a date and then while you are out, have your friends come around and kidnap ketone.

      Good chamistry nomenclature joke!

This is one of the funniest questions I ever saw at The Hive. Thanks.smile

Maybe we should make a collection of the best ones. This sounds like a good kandidate for a chemistry joke.

      Ketones

First of all, get more basic organic chemistry knowledge. You don't need to be a chemist, but have to know the basics at least.

Since this is yor first post, I will try to explain.

Ketone is a general term for organic compounds that are made of two radicals connected to one carbon atom, this atom also connected with an oxygen atom via a double bond.

Get an organic chemistry book and see a diagram. I will try to draw one :

Methyl Ethyl Ketone is made of :

     H
     |
  H-C-    Radical Methyl
     |
     H

     H  H
     |  |
  H-C-C-   Radical Ethyl
     |  |
     H  H

    H  H    O    H
    |  |    ||    |
 H-C-C---C---C-H    Methyl Ethyl Ketone
    |  |           |
    H  H          H

Sorry, this drawing not very good.

Ketone is not a compound name, it is an organic class of compounds like the above. This particular ketone is called Methyl Ethyl Ketone.

It is ALREADY a ketone, don't have to distill it. If you are asking, can I distill MEK ( methyl ethyl ketone ) and obtain a precursor for making XTC, the answer is NO, NO WAY !

Again, get more basic organic chemistry knowledge.

OTC MEK is often admixed with methyl isobutyl...

OTC MEK is often admixed with methyl isobutyl ketone too, although I doubt that this would make much of a difference when using as a solvent. (It is the best thing EVER for cleaning MBRP off of matchbooks too)

I think a digest, would bee a good idea, in the newbee forum, with all the common hive slang terms and nicknames used by more experienced bees, what y'all think?

Kids, say NO to the DEA!
