concentrating HCl, activating charcoal | ||||||
SWIM is thinking about making a fume hood with a carbon filter as a part of the exhaust. However, a proper carbon filter is too expensive and too hard to find in this area. He is thinking to make a filter with some activated charcoal as activated carbon. I am thinking if it is possible to activate the charcoal by washing the some barbecue charcoal with some concentrated HCl. I am thinking if the following is a possibility: 1. Since CaCl2 and HCl have the negatively charged atom, Cl-. Can I concentrate 35% HCl to higher concentration by putting some/ lots of CaCl2 in the HCl. 2. Soak the barbecure with the concentrated HCl to make activated charcoal. Do I have to use concentraed acid to make activated charcoal? Is it possible to concentrate HCl with the above method? Thanks to the people who answer my questions. |

Concentrating HCl is it still possibele to concentrate HCl with CaCl2 is just out of my own interest. SWIM's fume hood is going to be constantly 24 hours working with a fairly large air current. So I thought it would be a better idea for SWIM to activate some charcoal by himself. Plus, SWIM can get free charcoal from a charcoal manufacturer friend. Thanks for the suggestion, cheman. |

Why didn't you use fucking google before posting such a question ![]() http://www.atmospure.com/information/act http://www.tifac.org.in/news/accarbon.ht http://www.fao.org/docrep/X5555E/x5555e0 http://home.att.net/~africantech/GhIE/Ac There's no way the equipment needed to produce activated charcoal is going to cost you less than the price of buying it already made, unless you're going to use many kilotons monthly ![]() ![]() ![]() Chemistry is our Covalent Bond |
