      ghetto separatory funnel support stand

she would love to hear the different things (other than stands specifically made for sep funnels), bees use to rest or support their separatory funnels. she knows some bee out there has some novel idea. acquiring a sep funnel stand at this time is impossible given her situation . thanks

A few weeks ago I was bored and made a regular stand out of wood.

Just a long wooden(was it 1/4in.?) dowel inserted in a large hardwood bottom. Glued and let to dry. With a ring clamp the right size from the university this thing becomes capable of holding a seperatory funnel, when counterbalanced of course.

Its Ghetto, you need a ring clamp however.

      wood and wire

Take a piece of wood -- just a piece of 1" stock--- on the back side affix a couple of the saw-tooth type picture hangers. If you want you can just drill a couple of holes at an angle that will slide over a nail at the same angle on the wall.

Drill a couple of small holes in the board and run a piece of clothes hanger wire through them, making a loop larger than the stopcock part of the funnel, but smaller than its widest girth. Hang  this on a couple of nails in the wall, and pay attention to what you are doing.

Ghetto as its gets, and it works.

Use a piece of wood longer than it is wide, put your picture hanger at the top and the wire through the lower half of the board, and it will hang just fine from one nail. Just make sure you hit more than sheetrock when you drive the nail in.

When you are done, just put the board in your kit and hang the picture back on the nail.

mostly harmless

      Separatory Funnel Stand.....

Go to the junk yard and buy an old coil spring from a car, one that sits flat, then go to hardware store and buy some clear hose and make sure it can slip on the coil, either slip it on or slit the hose and just put it on the top coils that will come in contact with  your glass , plastic...whatever.

Paint the coil your favorite color then slip the hose and you have a separatory stand , then with a small of hose attach to the bottom of your funnel so you can pour your stuff into whatever you want.....

When you are not using it it can hold a plant....java

      exotic one

If you have the stand and clamp, then the ring is easy. You can go to a hardware store and by a length threaded rod or bar. This can be easily worked and bent around a cylinder or bottle and welded where it meets (ask a nice man at a machine shop/mechanics to do this, if you can't find a welder. Tell him you're making a mini basketball hoop for your kidwink).

If you have none of these parts then I have seen good ringstands made from heavy plastic containers and crates.

It was something like this: 20-40 litre rectangular, HDPE tub (you can find in any hardware store) was fastened (6-8 bolts with large, wide washers) onto a wooden base plate ~100 x 100 cm x 5 cm thick(so that HDPE tub is longways up and down) and a suitable sized hole was cut in the top of the HDPE container for the Sep funnel to rest in. The open section at the front is used to place your beaker, or whatever into. Shouldn't cost anymore than 20-30 bucks and is as good as a lab ringstand.wink

      Busted Unjointed Sep Funnels

Swim quite quickly busted his first unjointed sep funnels so he quite quickly converted to only getting the kind with a 24/40 male joint on the bottom. These are great as they easily stand upright when sitting in a 24/40 flask. No bulky, clumsy, ugly ring stand needed.

But I know you need something to work with right now so my only suggestion is (if you end up using some sort of metal ring) to maybe get some of that liquid rubber stuff available at hardware stores that is used to coat the handles of pliers and other similar small tools. Use that to dunk the ring you are using into and you'll get a nice snug fit of the sep funnel on the ring and it'll keep the glass from getting abrasions.

good luck!

Men need a layer of dust around the house. It tells them where to put things back.

For those bees out there that find glassware uneasy to procure, I suggest you never take your Sep funnel out of it's stand, even when cleaning it, and utilise sealable plastic containers for washes and extractions.

An Automotive paint supplier that has the solvents most bee's need also carries a paint gun holder that is ideal for holding a sep funnel. A gravity feed gun holder is the one to get. There about 8 bucks US and well worth the money. Buy some 3/8 id clear plastic tubing and slide around the split ring that the glass contacts when placed in one.. They have a base that can be screwed down or you can weld the base to a larger heaver plate like Swim did... either way it works.
