Can any bees offer advice on what the best piece of hardware for holding up our separatory funnels would be? I've heard that just a stand with a ring clamp is good, but I don't see how this would be stable? What should SWIN use to keep his sep funnel upright while the magick takes place? Thanks in advance, fellow honey-lovers. Due to the graphic nature of this program, viewer discretion is strongly discouraged. |

Regular lab stand (1/2" or 3/8" steel rod) and a ring clamp. It works well. 4-6" ring, depending on the size of the funnel (250ml-2L). |

Big wide-base jars with a mouth the proper width to keep the tip of the funnel from touching the bottom work really well if you need your stands free while waiting for layers to seperate... z Another lab hint: Taking a sharpie and putting a "X" on the bottom of a fbf right on the dimple make it easy to quickly dead-center a stirbar to keep it from stubbornly flying off it's pivot halfway through a rxn or distillation (or at least makes it easier for me). El-Cheapo way, Get a wood board, plywood or whatever. Width needed depends on size of your funnels. Make round holes and a slot to one side. Again, hole size depends on size of funnel. Pickup a couple of shelf brackets and bolt it to Your Wall. You can hang as many as you want. If your exhaust fan vibrates the wall a little, You can even get the dildo effect, no extra charge. |

a 500ml sep fits perfect in a 2L beaker and when you forget to close the valve (and you will) and all the goods fall out they will fall in the beaker saving you. time and honey what are you goofy? |

Pickup a couple of shelf brackets and bolt it to Your Wall. And if you chamfer the hole it is even nicer. I have seen these, albeit with a clamp for attaching to monkey bars, sold commercially. |

Another lab tip is to take some vinyl tubing, spice once it along the length and use that to pad the metal ring (or glass rim on a glass jar) so that if you accidentally set the sep funnel down too hard, that the glass won't crack. |

How big is the sep funnel? For 22L sep funnels, old wooden chairs are good. Just use a 6" hole saw and put a hole right in the seat. A rough jigsaw hole will work fine too. It's very convenient; you can put a container nicely underneath the stopcock. To shake these giants by yourself when 2/3 full, carefully lift it by the neck, rest on one knee while sitting on one of the 20L drums of whatever, and slowly invert and when the stopcock is in the right position and easy for you to vent when needed, shake and swirl on one knee. A ringstand is fine for 6L and under. I used to use latex tubing slit down the middle to line the rings. The holes in the wooden chairs worked fine as-is. Free Strike too. |

Use tool support holders w/2 brace prongs that plug into 2 holes on a garage type tool support grid (equally spaced holes)made of compressed wood. fits good for both 500, 1000ml funnels. Use big rubber bands to secure on the clamps at the base and top. Eqmt found at any hardware store. Also, 500ml sep funnels work great for addition funnels on 24/40 glass using #4 rubber stoppers drilled out with 3/4 or 7/8 bit. Seeking Truth in Chemistry. |
