Ritter Member posted 06-26-98 01:00 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Does anyone know if tetrabutylammonium chloride can be converted to tetrabutylammonium bromide by, say, refluxing it in HBr acid? If not is there another way? Tks. Cherrie Baby Member posted 06-28-98 08:07 AM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You shouldn't need to convert TBAC to TBABr. TBAC will substitute for TBABr in just about all cases. PTCs normally transport anions into an organic phase - so during a PTC reaction the Br- anion will be substituted by the anion which is being transported. Yes - If you refluxed TBAC with xs HBr [or even NaBr] then this would convert to TBABr. But remember these quarternary ammonium salts are hygroscopic. They have a tendency to absorb water from the atmosphere. It is difficult to remove all water from them when trying to separate them from water.
