In 1967 or 1968, I was interested in synthesis of psychoactive substances and I came across a process to make mescaline from the lignin (wood) of 3 types of eucalyptus trees: e. regnans, e. diversicolor or e. obliqua. As I recall, I found it in the Australasian Journal of Chemistry.
Has anyone done anything with this route?
California is full of eucalyptus trees.

Post 190600 (halfapint: "Lignin Syringaldehyde Again", Novel Discourse). I have typically attained over 10% ether soluble lignin components from hardwood sawdust, comprising largely vanillin and syringaldehyde. Cardboard, corrugated paper, produces yet higher yields, for reasons not known to me. Apparatus is a cast iron pot and a whisk for the air oxidation, though air injection helps.
