This won't work with tryptamine. Formaldehyde and acid will lead to a pictet-spengler cyclization, forming a beta-carboline. http://rhodium.lycaeum.org |

But not for tryptamines, since they will cyclize to beta-carbolines under this conditions (Pictet-Spengler reaction) . |
