i know of a procedure that uses benzaldehyde and nitroethane as starting materials.

If you mean making, 1-phenyl-2-nitropropane, then you should go via the knoevenagel reaction between nitroethane and benzaldehyde with as catalyst e.g n-butylamine.
And then reducing that with LiAlH4 in THF or with Al/Hg in IPA/EtOH/MeOH and reducing it to amphetamine which is in fact propaneamine coupled to a benzene ring.

i believe there was a discussion of obtaing this through the decarboxylation of phenylalanine a while ago, if i remeber it only required heating it.

ye i know there is tons of ways to synth this molecule
my question was to synth it starting with benzene
