The simplified pathophysiology of any narcotic overdose is this:
Overdose
Parasympathetic overstimulation
Depression of respiratory centers of autonomic nervous system
Respiratory arrest
Anoxia with systemic acidosis
Loss of consciousness
Cardiac arrest
Ice on the balls - for that matter, anywhere BUT THE FACE (see below) - is an extreme sympathetic stimulus and therefore counteracts the parasympathetic overstimulus. A sympathetic stimulus is only effective before the patient lapses into unconsciousness, because by that time, the autonomic nervous system is out cold too.
Depending on the level of consciousness and the route of narcotic administration, even deliberate breathing by the overdosed can prevent further worsening of the situation. Narcs depress the automatic breathing system but do not prevent the 'forced' breathing mechanism unless consciousness is lost.
It is important to note that ice on the face activates the "diving reflex," which is an extreme parasympathetic response, thus adding more to your problem rather than taking away.
Never knew that info but its good to know, such a simple thing to do if your in the situation with another person who is in trouble, atleast until the paramedics arrive....
