Just following on from thoughts brought up in the reductive methylation thread... could someone with more knowledge on trptamines than my own (which is limited to say the least!) please comment on this synthetic pathway??

Phenylhydrazine + 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)butanal --> -H2O --> N,N-dimethyl-4-(2-phenylhydrazono)butan-1-amine

N,N-dimethyl-4-(2-phenylhydrazono)butan-1-amine + ZnCl2 --> Fischer Indole Synthesis --> -NH3 --> N,N-dimethyltryptamine

??? Hmmm?

If your concerned over the phenylhydrazine i put a thread over in essential methods for its synthesis discussion over a pathway i devised in my many ramblings! Oh oh.... heres a link to the thread:

Thanks,

Just a thought, could the 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)butanal be made from GABA?
ie 4-aminobutanoic acid, health food store stuff?

Firstly dimethylation of the primary amine (by formaldehyde?), to make N,N-dimethylaminobutanoic acid then reduction (with?) to the aldehyde.

Maybe for the reduction Al(i-PrO)3 or LAH? NaBH4?
Just some extra thoughts...

There was a good yielding method on the hive for that butanal. Only sitback was that it needed ozone from an ozone generator.
But this is all I can remember.
